Facebook says it will put warning labels on fake news articles, CNN reports.

These fake articles will have a “flag” on them, and a label that says, “disputed by 3rd Party Fact-Checkers.”

The Users may click on a “learn why this is disputed” link to learn more.

Facebook will not fact-check. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said:

“we do not want to be arbiters of truth ourselves, but instead rely on our community and trusted third parties."

Several dozen third-parties have pledged to follow the International Fact Checking Code of Principles, established by Poynter, a journalism organization.

“We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organizations,”

Facebook VP Adam Mosseri said in a blog post Thursday:

“If the fact checking organizations identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to the corresponding article explaining why.”

Users can still post whatever they want, although in addition to being flagged it may be placed lower in the algorithm Facebook uses to determine what appears on news feeds.

Mosseri said Facebook will focus on, “the worst of the worst, the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain.”

Zuck has said that he does not believe “fake news” stories changed the outcome of the election. But he wrote, “we take misinformation seriously.”
